LIZA FACT CHECKS:
Does Iowa still have Mafia?
No, their Mafioso appears to all have gone legit. In
this story, Tess father claims to be an honest business man, but he’s only more
careful when killing and muscling people. Truth is that Beneto longs for the
old days in Chicago where the mafia is still going strong. (The Chicago Mafia
remains alive and dangerous in real life. In fact, the Feds aren’t sure they’ll
ever curtail them.)

Megan Clarke had a good life until
she wins the Mega Times Lottery and discovers the prize comes with a curse.
Worse than the many money-hungry suitors, a serial killer has her in his sight.
She changes her name and moves to Iowa with plans to buy their last major
forest of white oaks and turn it into a State Park.
Unfortunately, the Lottery Curse
doesn't stop at state lines and someone there wants her dead, as well. Good
thing a disturbingly handsome law officer is just as determined to keep her
alive.
Excerpt
from A Fortune to Die For
“Iowa used to have an active mafia. And while
it has been quiet for a time, the speed in which this guy showed up indicates
there’s still someone calling shots from here. And we don’t think Drecker did this. We think it was Helen’s son.”
“Jeffrey is a mafia
kingpin?”
Steve shook his head.
“No, her eldest son, Benito. Jeffrey is her second son. What do you know about
him?”
“Nothing. I just heard
him yelling at Helen.”
“Did he see you?”
“I’m not sure. The
family was in the main cabin when I carried a box of groceries into the
kitchen, but Tess led them to believe I was there delivering the groceries.”
“So how did you come
to know his name?”
She grimaced. “I’m
ashamed to say I was eavesdropping behind the kitchen door. He didn’t sound
like a very nice man, which must be why Helen has gone out of her way not to make Tess a target of their
anger.”

there are several serious barriers between them: Steel’s career cannot
withstand another scandal and Tess’s father will kill anyone who gets in the
way of his daughter marrying a Chicago mobster.

for Unexpected Love
Sleep came easy,
but Steel’s dreams quickly turned to nightmares featuring Benito Campinelli, the head of a dangerous mafia
family. Father dearest would object to an Englishman eyeing his daughter.
Soon the horrors from the book he had read
came to life, with him as the victim. When Benito’s “doctor” began flaying the
skin off Steel’s genitals in what they called a second circumcision, he woke up
screaming.

It is interesting how Mafia groups come and go. I suppose that they needed the bigger city life of Chicago rather than small towns.
ReplyDeleteIowa had a teflon Don (never had a charge that stuck to him) up til 1967. When he was called into a Senate Committee he brought a metal case with his financials, but not the KEY to the case (which was locked) and his lawyer noted the key had not been listed in the subpena. Clever right? He killed someone late in his life, but before they could charge him with rackateering, he died of natural causes. So he remained upon his death a Don who killed many but was never convicted of a crime.
DeleteDang - that is one smart Don! Or his attorney was smart. Either way...wow.
DeleteYea, but that trick should only work once. Had he not died, he would have gone to prison on rackeering charges. Why they didn't charge him with murder I've no idea, but by dying, he remains a Don never found guilty of a single crime. His son went on to write a book about the mafia and would go onto the Howard Stern show all the time. He left Iowa and moved to California, baby! He declared himself an expert on the Mafia and would consult with writers and producers for a fee.
